Returning from the planet Pyris VII, one of the members of the <I>Enterprise</I> landing party arrives on the transporter platform dead. Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Commander Spock and Doctor McCoy beam down to investigate, only to find that Scotty and Sulu have been transformed into mindless zombies. They encounter two humanoids called Sylvia and Korob - a witch and a warlock. After the two beings take Kirk, Spock and McCoy prisoner in their castle, they demonstrate their powers by holding a small model of the <I>Enterprise</I> over a candle flame, causing the crew aboard the real vessel to slowly roast alive. Kirk learns that these two beings have been sent on a mission of conquest by their home world, and have used a matter transmuter to assume human form. Sylvia becomes interested in the captain, and decides to abandon her original mission so that she can learn all about human emotions and experiences; however, when she discovers that Kirk is using her just to gain an advantage, Sylvia is furious, and she transforms herself into a giant black cat and goes on a murderous rampage...
